The choice of binder alters not only the rate of oxidation but the refractive index of the cured paint film. Cold-pressed linseed forms a dense, durable matrix with a higher yellowing index over decades, while unrefined walnut oil cures with a softer, more flexible skin that yields beautifully under raking daylight.
In practice, balancing these mediums across heavy impasto layers requires careful consideration of relative drying times. A faster-curing ground will invariably wrinkle if overlaid with a slow-drying organic vehicle before complete polymerization occurs beneath the surface crust.

Easel progress and linen preparation
Stretching raw Belgian linen
Each length is dampened and tensioned systematically across oak bars to ensure absolute planarity before sizing with rabbit skin glue.
Raw earth and iron oxides
Milling dry pigment powders by hand on a porphyry slab yields subtle particle variations absent in commercial tube colors.
